KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Is there another Great One hanging around your house?

Maybe this is the weekend to hit the ice and find out if the next Wayne Gretzky or Gordie Howe or Hayley Wickenheiser has been eating breakfast with you all these years.

This Saturday, Feb. 20, is Try Hockey For Free Day at multiple locations around the metro including the Line Creek Ice Arena north of the river.

That’s where we visited with Hector Luevano of the Kansas City Saints hockey team Thursday morning. (He was taking shots at what may have been the world’s oldest rookie goalie with bad ankles, by the way.)

Any age is welcome to try the game. All you need is a bike helmet, warm clothes and mittens or gloves. They provide the skates and sticks.

Hector knows the value of this sport. At one point, he had six of his own seven children on the ice competing, learning and having fun.

For more information and to register, visit www.tryhockeyforfree.com.

So, this Saturday, strap on the skates and get ready to faceoff.

You’ll have a ball…or, should that be, a puck.
